Winn-Dixie stores in 14 states are being asked to return 1.5 million pounds
of luncheon meats after sample inspections found the product contained an
abnormally high level of pure beef.
"This could cause a shock to the
digestive system of someone who is accustomed to eating luncheon meats that
are mostly filler consisting of pig snouts and horse hoofs. For this health
reason we decided to recall the product and reprocess it with the proper
mix," said an executive with the grocery chain.
Customers are urged to
return unopened packages of the food substance, that goes by the brand names
"Meat Slop," "Hungry Bull" and "Luncheon Loafer" for a full refund.
A
consumer health organization applauds the swift move by the chain. "A higher
beef content raises the cholesterol level significantly and means more of
the product is actually digested rather than passed through the body as is
the case with normal luncheon meat," a spokesman said.
